Preparation


Please bring all previous films (from other practices) to each appointment.


For full details on individual examinations refer to the Procedures page.

X-ray Procedures:
Ba Meal: No food, fluids or smoking for 6 hours prior to the examination.
Ba Enema: Follow the instructions provided in the preparation kit.
Intravenous Pyelogram: Fast for 4 hours.
Mammography: No underarm deodorant, cream or talcum powder. Wear separates. Bring previous mammograms.

Ultrasound:
Abdomen: No food, fluids or smoking for 6 hours prior to the examination.
Pelvis: Be able to present with a full bladder. We suggest drinking 1 litre of water 1.5 hours prior
Other parts: No preparation.
Echocardiography: No preparation. Please bring recent chest X-rays (from other practices).


Computed Tomography (CT):

For studies requiring contrast media (e.g. brain, chest, abdomen, pelvis or neck): Fluids only for 4 hours prior. Please notify us if you are asthmatic or diabetic. Other modified studies can be performed without contrast if indicated or required.

For studies requiring oral contrast media please follow the instructions provided by the practice during the 2 hours prior to the study.

No preparation is required for the examination of the spine.

Please discuss with the practice if there is concern.


Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):
  1. Eat normally unless you have been instructed differently by your physician. Children and infants requiring sedation should not eat or drink approximately four hours prior to the MRI examination.
  2. Take all medication as usual.
  3. Wear loose comfortable clothes.
  4. Do not wear any jewellery (including watches). Do not wear makeup or any hair products (e.g. hair spray, gel, etc.)

Nuclear Medicine:
Thallium Stress Test: Cease Beta Blockers 3 days prior
Meckels Scan: No food or fluids 4 hours prior.
Biliary Scan: No food or fluids 12 hours prior.
Gastric Emptying: No food or fluids 12 hours prior.
Renal Scan (for hydronephrosis): 1 litre of fluid 1 hour before.

NO PREPARATION FOR: GATED HEART POOL, MYOCARDIAL HOT SPOT, LUNG LIVER, GALLIUM, G.I.T. BLEED, THYROID & PARATHYROID, DMSA RENAL, BONE ADRENAL, TESTICULAR
