Procedures / Barium enemas
What is the test for?A barium enema test is used to look closely at the large bowel and / or colon. The barium substance appears white on an x-ray, assisting in detection of any abnormal or irregular elements.
What is the preparation for the test?
The colon needs to be as clean as possible before the test. A preparation kit should be used and you should follow the instructions on the kit in detail.
How is the test performed?
A barium solution is prepared in a special bag. A tube is slightly inserted in to the rectum by a Radiographer and the solution is slowly allowed to run out of the bag and in to the colon. You may be asked to move in order to help the solution move sufficiently around the colon. Once the Radiographer is able to view the images on the screen, the actual x-ray will be taken.
Will I feel anything?Initially you may feel a strange sensation. Once the colon is coated in barium, the liquid is removed and replaced with air to allow the walls of the colon apart, at this stage you may feel like you want to go to the toilet. This is a natural response and may be a bit unpleasant but should not be painful.
How long will it take?
About 20 minutes.
