Procedures / Barium swallow / meal
What is the test for?The barium swallow allows for images and examination of the oesophagus. The barium meal test produces images of the stomach. It is not unusual for both tests to be performed together. An x-ray of the area being studied is taken, the barium substance appears white on an x-ray, assisting in detection of any abnormal or irregular elements.
What is the preparation for the test?
No food, fluids or smoking for 6 hours prior to the examination.
How is the test performed?
You will be asked to drink a barium solution. You may also be given some powder granules and water; the granules are effervescent and the purpose is to inflate your stomach slightly and coat the lining with barium so it can be accuarately assessed. As the barium moves through the doctor will be able to watch it on the screen and take images (x-rays) of the area being examined. You may be asked to move on the bed and hold your breath for short moments in order that the x-rays can be taken as required.
