Procedures / Ultrasound: Pelvis (female)

What is the test for?
Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce images. These waves are transmitted into your body from a probe that is held against your skin after some gel has been applied. The ultrasound machine uses the sound waves to create an image of the relevant area. Ultrasound is a safe technique with no harmful side-effects.

What is the preparation for the test?

Empty bladder one hour before appointment and then drink between 600ml of water. Do not empty bladder until after appointment. Depending on the clinical requirements you may need an internal scan. This is called transvaginal. The probe has been sterilized and is covered with condoms. Once the probe has been inserted the sonographer will move gently from side to side to obtain images.

How is the test performed?
You may be asked to change in to a gown. The ultrasound transducer will be in direct contact with the skin, a lubricating gel will be used to enable the sonographer to guide the transducer more effectively and allow for better reporting images.

Will I feel anything?

You may feel the gel on your skin and sometimes it is necessary for the sonographer to apply pressure to a certain point to identify certain areas. You should not feel any pain.

How long will it take?
A scan will usually only last for 20 minutes, but may take longer depending if a clearer image is required.
